Say It LOUD: The one that got away...

My first (developed) idea was a viral campaign of pranks played my designers at the office. The idea of "Serious fun!" captured the spirit of working in the design industry with particular emphasis on how designers must design responsibly and sustainably in order to help save the environment...

One Week Brief: Say it LOUD! - My inspiration

Seeing as you can't paste a video into a creative log, I thought I'd post it on here...

Design Society Website

I have been working on the new Leed University, Design Society website recently and I'm interested to hear what people think of it. The target audience is of course the School of Design students but also the tutors and potential employers of Leeds Uni graduates/students.

There are a few aims for the site:
- to give advice to School of Design students, advice written by students, not lecturers.
- to let our members (and non-members) know about what's going on in the society, socials etc.
- to help put University of Leeds design graduates firmly on the employee wish-list!

So please let me know what you think!

Student life: how to make an alternative income

I have been lucky enough to win quite a lot of freelance projects from websites such as freelancer.co.uk and studentgems.com. My contact details got passed onto the Guardian to be interviewed for an article published today: "Student life: how to make an alternative income"

Put Me to the Test - Stream London

I've now finished my third brief from my Put Me to the Test experiment given to me by direct marketing agency, Stream London.

Brief: Buddies are know to vets as the company that delivered the puppy pack - a free pack given to all owners of puppys/kittens. This good will means they can have POS in Vets promoting their pet insurance. The only real competitor in this environment is PetPlan. The proposition to pet owners is - Buddies - competitive pet insurance from the young pet specialists.

Target Audience: Owners of young pets (puppies, kittens)

Deliverable: Point of Sale Item

Deadline: One week

Solution:Sitting in the waiting room at the vets can be very boring especially for a family with young, restless children. My Point of Sale stand could hopefully add some fun to the long waits.

I wanted to make a POS stand that could be interacted with. The thought of the stands at the beach where the family put their heads through the holes and take a photo sprang to mind. Since the insurance is for puppies and kittens, I thought perhaps they could put their heads through the holes and the families at the vets can take pictures on their phones/digital cameras.

The idea behind the astronaut and biker suits was that the animals are ‘protected’ with Buddies insurance. ‘Insured pets have more fun!’ emphasises how insured pets are happier and healthier than uninsured pets.

I have added paw track stickers to the floor to encourage interaction with the stand.

Feel free to leave me feedback, that is the aim of it after all!

Put Me to the Test - GameSurgeons.com

I've just finished my second brief from my Put Me to the Test experiment given to me by web designer Colin Grist.

Brief: Make some really hip, small characters for a new website gamesurgeons.com. It's a site about gaming and game reviews. The characters should be doctors and nurses but with a cartoony feel and they would be dotted around the layout. Really nice, modern and humorous in style.

Deliverable: Set of characters

Deadline: Two weeks

Solution:

I wanted to create a set of characters that reflected the design of the GameSurgeons website.

I decided to imagine characters that would work in the GameSurgeons hospital. Using the style of vector forms without outlines and slight gradients I created a set of Southpark-like figures that can be used to examine new games and consoles.

The nurse carries an Xbox game instead of a clipboard, the surgeon is playing with the GameSurgeons syringe and the doctor has a PlayStation controller for a stethoscope.

Put Me to the Test - Karbon Creative

I've just finished my first brief from my Put Me to the Test experiment given to me by agency Karbon Creative.

Brief: Get existing Audi owners to visit their dealership.

Deliverable: Press Ad

Deadline: One week

Solution 1: Quite often businessmen and women will stop off to buy a coffee on their way to work.

I suggest that instead of stopping at BP to grab a coffee, they are invited for a free coffee at their local dealership. Whilst enjoying a free espresso they can chat with the sales team and admire the cars on display. This is an opportunity for impulse buys or for booking a car in for service for example.

Audi’s signature headlights were what inspired my creative idea.

Solution 2: Car dealearships are not necessarily located on the way to work for Audi owners to pop in easily. This means that in order to get them to go out of their way to visit the showroom, there has to be a good reason.

I suggest holding Scalectrix competitions at each location and inviting Audi owners and their families to compete against fellow Audi owners. Great fun for everyone, but also a great opportunity for impulse buys whilst waiting for a turn on the Scalectrix track. This time allows the salesmen to talk with the customers, show them the new cars, perhaps give the owners’ cars a quick check and suggest accessories which could be purchased.

The idea of holding events allows the owners and their families to have great fun whilst connecting with the Audi brand amongst the cars in the dealerships.

It's worth stepping outside of your comfort zone once in a while...

I was asked to design and build a site in the style of Parasol Group's website. This was a high standard to compete with and obviously I didn't want to copy it. So, I designed my first website in Illustrator which was wierd! I'm not really an illustrator either so it was not playing to my strong points at all. I persevered and actually suprised myself, I'm super pleased with the site =)

New Website Design...take four!

I don't think a web designer can ever really be 100% happy with their personal website, so I designed it again!

Year in Industry

I think myself and most of my coursemates can relate to this picture!

My New Website!

My website has a new look! I decided to base the design on my love of technical drawing and all things mathematical in design. I have used illustrations of geometrical construction of polygons to give page numbers to my portfolio.

This is what it used to look like:

Web Design Placement June-Aug 2009

On 2nd June 2009 I started a web design placement at rk6 in Leeds. I've been learning html, css and javascript and also using my Flash, Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign skills.

I must give my "mentor" Colin Grist a mention as he has to put up with "Coliiiin, how do you...?"!
